Jumping belongs to Amsterdam like Anky van Grunsven belongs to IPS Salinero. The international equestrian event will take place in Holland’s capital city for the 49th time on the last weekend in January. Jumping Amsterdam looks back to a turbulent year with a change in the organisation and a new board. But beside the Amsterdam Community, Foundation Topsport Amsterdam, De Telegraaf and the Amsterdam RAI, the province of Noord-Holland has become part of the very strong basis. These parties ensure an irreplaceable platform and secure the continuation of the event. We are already looking forward to the 50th edition in 2009!

Two World Cups
The Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation has done everything it could to positively introduce the new organisation of Jumping Amsterdam to the FEI. George de Jong, manager topsport and international affairs of the Dutch Federation, is very pleased that Amsterdam continues to host two FEI World Cup™ competitions in 2008. He is pleased to see that the new organisation has firmly started the preparations for Jumping Amsterdam 2008. “It is crucial for our riders on their way to the Olympic Games in Hong Kong that we can keep organizing World Cup competitions in the Netherlands,” explains De Jong. The FEI World Cup™ Dressage qualifier Presented by the Province Noord-Holland, the kür to music, is scheduled for Saturday afternoon 26 January. The Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping qualifier presented by De Telegraaf takes place on Sunday afternoon 27 January.

Kick off Olympic Year
Jumping Amsterdam is for many riders the first competition in the Olympic Year and the event enjoys a good position in the World Cup season. ‘Jumping’ not only takes place after the holidays, which is seen by many riders as a period of rest. Jumping Amsterdam offers a unique opportunity to show continuation of shape and to pick up the competition rhythm towards the Olympic Games in Hong Kong and the FEI World Cup™ Finals earlier in the season. For the FEI World Cup™ Dressage, Amsterdam is one of the last qualifiers before the Final in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Various top riders have already submitted their entries in Amsterdam. Dutch dressage queen Anky van Grunsven will use the opportunity to ride her trump horse IPS Salinero, but also Jan Brink (Swe) with Briar and Heike Kemmer (Ger) with Bonaparte have promised to start in Amsterdam. The spectators can furthermore enjoy various highlights in the freestyle tests, as most competitors will use new music for the Olympic Games 2008.
In jumping, Amsterdam is the ninth qualifier in the World Cup series. After Bordeaux (Fra), Vigo (Esp) and ’s-Hertogenbosch (Ned), the exciting Final will take place in Gothenburg (Swe). Jumping Amsterdam is traditionally a show jumping event, referring to her name. The emphasis in the programme is still on international jumping classes with the Grand Prix of Amsterdam on Saturday evening as one of its main highlights.

Amsterdam
The city of Amsterdam offers the spectators and competitors more than equestrian sports. The Amsterdam RAI exhibition centre in which Jumping Amsterdam takes place, is centrally located in the city, at walking distance from various hotels and close to Schiphol Airport. The fact that the government strongly supports ‘Jumping’ is a result of the fact that both ‘Jumping’ and ‘Amsterdam’ offer enormous attractions to tourists. Amsterdam is the centre of cultural activities and top sport events and was the premier location of the Netherlands during the 1928 Olympic Games. Beside top sport, Amsterdam guarantees a unique history and belongs to one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with her canals and monumental houses. Anky van Grunsven and IPS Salinero won their new Freestyle to music in LondenAfter Anky’s ride she said she felt a bit disappointed when she had left the arena because she sometimes was ahead of the music. “The good thing was that I felt it and did notice it. And I know the first time cannot be perfect. But still I do hope for a perfect ride, that’s me” Chairman of the judges Dr Volker Moritz however was full of praise. “It was a very special atmosphere tonight and I was very impressed by the new Freestyle of Anky van Grunsven. It fitted the horse very well and I rewarded it with very high marks.” Judge Stephen Clarke added: “It was very subtle, very clever, very difficult. I think this Freestyle has every chance to grow as it needs a little exposure and probably practice.”

Compared to Anky’s gold winning Freestyle with the French chansons, not only the degree of difficulty in the technical performance has risen, also the degree of difficulty in the music added to the atmosphere and impression. Composer Wibi Soerjadi witnessed the performance himself and said: “This was not a translation of the movements of the horse into music. It was an expression of emotion. This ‘Dance of devotion’ was played by 70 musicians and had 16 different melodies and voices coming all together to express the endless mastership of this pair. That was what I intended to express.” According to the judges he succeeded in that quite well.

Anky van Grunsven will show her home crowd in Amsterdam an even better timed new Freestyle, she promised. When not having bought tickets yet you better be quick, the Freestyle almost has sold out. Anky’s Dutch debut will be the second debut of music by Wibi Soerjadi in Amsterdam. Lasst year Imke Schellekens-Bartels debuted in Amsterdam accompanied by Soerjadi’s music.

After Heike Kemmer now also Swiss Silvia Iklé with her passage and piaffe-miracle Salieri has promised Amsterdam will be her next stage to perform.In Frankfurt at the WC™ qualifier she became the runner up behind Isabell Werth.In this third qualifier of the Western European League Isabell Werth and Warum Nicht FRH repeated their win of the first qualifier of the season in Odense. However due to a reglement change Isabell Werth didn’t receive World Cup™ standing points. She as the title defender is automatically qualified for the Final and should not take away standing points from those still trying to qualify. So runner up Swiss Silvia Iklé partnering Salieri now received the World Cup™ standing points for the winner.

Silvia Iklé rode her wonderful tango-Freestyle that already brought her a lot of fame. “Both me and Salieri feel very confident and happy with the music, we love to perform this Freestyle test”, Silvia Iklé smiled. Highlights of course were the piaffe and passage. Some minor mistakes in the one tempi changes and the limitations in the extended walk prevented her from a higher score. Silvia Iklé has not made up her mind yet for the World Cup™ Season but hopes to be in Amsterdam and see what the standings might bring her from that point, as obviously the year 2008 brings the Olympic challenge which marks the season.

De nieuwe kà ¼rmuziek van pianist Wibi Soerjadi voor Anky van Grunsven met IPS Salinero wordt aanstaande woensdag voor het eerst gepresenteerd tijdens de Olympia Horse Show in Londen. De Nederlandse primeur van deze unieke kà ¼r op muziek vindt plaats op zaterdag 26 januari tijdens Jumping Amsterdam in de RAI. Voor iedereen die Anky nu al in actie wil zien met haar nieuwe proef kan de wereldbekerwedstrijd in Londen aanstaande woensdag vanaf 22.00 uur live volgen via Eurosport.

De wereldbekeronderdelen van Jumping Amsterdam, met de dressuur op zaterdag en de springrubriek op zondag, worden het laatste weekend van januari uitgezonden door de NOS. De NOS besteedt steeds meer zendtijd aan paardensport. Morgenavond, dinsdag 18 december, staan de springruiters centraal. Het gouden springteam tijdens het EK in Mannheim is genomineerd voor de titel ‘Sportploeg van het Jaar’. Het winnende team wordt morgen bekend gemaakt tijdens het NOC*NSF Sportgala. Ook wordt er aanstaande woensdag in het NOS Sportjournaal aandacht besteed aan de nieuwe kür van Anky van Grunsven en Wibi Soerjadi. Verder wordt aanstaande vrijdagavond een Sportjaaroverzicht uitgezonden met ondermeer de hippische hoogtepunten van 2007.

Afgelopen week is de provincie Noord Holland toegevoegd aan de rij partners van Jumping Amsterdam 2008. Naast onder andere Gemeente Amsterdam, Stichting Topsport Amsterdam, BMC, De Telegraaf en de Amsterdam RAI schaart nu ook Noord-Holland zich bij de solide achterban van het paardensportevenement dat het laatste weekend van januari plaatsvindt in onze hoofdstad. Dat betekent dat de belangrijkste dressuurrubriek in het programma de FEI World Cup Dressage presented by Provincie Noord Holland wordt. De springruiters strijden onder andere om de Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping presented by De Telegraaf en de BMC Grote Prijs van Amsterdam.

Naast de financiële ondersteuning van deze partijen zorgt ook de bestuursformatie van Jumping Amsterdam voor een onmisbaar draagvlak. Hans Bakker, directeur Amsterdam RAI vormt met Wim Bohnenn (De Telegraaf), Noëlle Nanning (voormalig projectmanager) en Pieter Wiersinga (o.a. voorzitter WK Vierspannen 2008) het bestuur. De sporttechnische delegatie wordt aangevoerd door wedstrijdleider Rogier van Iersel, de organisatie door Titia Heijbrock.

Nu Jumping dichterbij komt, wordt elke dag duidelijker hoezeer het evenement leeft onder het publiek. De kaartverkoop is sinds enkele weken in volle gang, vooral de Wereldbekers dressuur en springen blijken erg in trek tijdens de voorverkoop. Ook de springruiters in de basisklassen L, M, Z en ZZ kijken uit naar de laatste week van januari. Op donderdag 24 januari, de openingsdag van Jumping, kunnen zij aan start komen in de internationale piste. Inmiddels loopt het storm wat betreft de inschrijvingen van de selectiewedstrijden die worden gehouden in Haarlem, Houten, Bunschoten, Oudkarspel en Ouderkerk aan de Amstel.

The best thing that has happened to Dressage thus far, the Freestyle to music and its challenging FEI World Cupâ„ ¢ Series, is on the verge of another breathtaking season, with the first qualifier for the Western European League set to take place this week in Odense (DEN) 222-25 November. Time has been kind to the prestigious FEI World Cupâ„ ¢ Dressage series, now embarking on its 23rd season†¦

Inspired by the flying one tempi changes of Olympic champion Ahlerich and Dr Reiner Klimke to the Olympic hymn in Los Angeles 1984, the idea for a Freestyle to music came to the mind of organiser Joep Bartels. Initially, the riders and the National Federations were somewhat hesitant. However, it was not long before the Kür to music became what has been heralded as one of the greatest developments in Dressage. FEI Dressage Committee Chair, Mariette Witthages puts it this way: “The Freestyle and the FEI World Cup™ have, in many ways, placed Dressage on the map. The concept of the World Cup™ was strong from the start and it has proved to be a very good thing for the development and emancipation of Dressage.”

That the concept was strong from the start is also reflected in the fact that only minor changes in the format have been made since its inception in 1985-1986. The most important being that only the Freestyle and not the Grand Prix combined with the Freestyle is decisive for the FEI World Cup™ title, a rule which saw the day in 2002. Says Mariette Withages, “For me this is one of the strongest points in the FEI World Cup™ Dressage. It makes the form of the day decisive, which is a challenge for the riders.”

For this season the new Freestyle protocol is introduced adding the halt into the compulsory marks and changing the quantifiers for all artistic parts. International riders have already been put to the test throughout last summers’ season.

Because of the audiences that embraced the Freestyle, developments in Dressage went further and, much to the delight of the fans, in Atlanta 1996 the Freestyle was welcomed to the Olympic format of the Games.

Influenced and driven by the enthusiasm of the crowds for the Freestyle to Music – the first season in 1985-1986 began with the victory of the very light and elegant Danish Marzog (Herzog x Marcio xx) with Anne-Grethe Törnblad-Jensen (DEN). Back to Denmark, but this time for the opening qualifier of the 2007-2008 season, with Odense hosting for the first time an FEI World Cup™ qualifier while Leif Törnblad, the former trainer of Anne-Grethe Törnblad-Jensen, is sitting in as one of the judges November 22-25.

The future of the International Dressage scene and particularly the FEI World Cup™ Dressage has recently been in the headlines with marketing and international success at the heart of discussions. Change and reassessing the format are constructive and necessary processes and the discussions and interest which have been shown confirm the value of the series now as well as in the future. Amsterdam has a good position in the range of Qualifiers, being a show held in a very vivid and interesting city of great value for tourism. Combining a visit to Jumping Amsterdam with some Amsterdam shopping and a tourism tour is very worth wile.

Two years ago the Final was held in Amsterdam, now the Qualifier in Amsterdam January 25-26 will be the sixth of the seven Qualifiers in the Western European League when tension will already build up for the Final. Van 24 tot en met 27 januari bezoekt de crà ¨me-de-la-crà ¨me aan ruiters en amazones de Amsterdam RAI voor de 49e editie van ‘Jumping’, dat tevens de sportieve aftrap van het Olympisch jaar betekent. ERMELO (KNHS) – Jumping Amsterdam, dat plaatsvindt van 24 t/m 27 januari 2008, heeft ook voor 2008 zowel voor dressuur als voor springen een wereldbeker-kwalificatiewedstrijd toegewezen gekregen. Dit heeft de FEI, de wereldbond, vandaag bekend gemaakt aan de Koninklijke Nederlandse Hippische Sportfederatie.

De KNHS heeft alles in het werk gesteld om de nieuwe organisatie van Jumping Amsterdam positief te introduceren bij de FEI. George de Jong, directeur Topsport van de KNHS, is zeer verheugd dat Amsterdam ook volgend jaar gastheer is voor twee wereldbekerkwalificatiewedstrijden en is blij dat de nieuwe organisatie de voorbereidingen van Jumping Amsterdam editie 2008 in volle gang heeft gezet. “Voor onze ruiters is het op weg naar de Olympische Spelen in Hong Kong van groot belang dat we wereldbekerkwalificatiewedstrijden in Nederland kunnen blijven organiseren”, aldus De Jong.

De Grand Prix Dressuur vindt plaats op vrijdag 25 januari en op zaterdagmiddag 26 januari staat de de kür op muziek op het programma. De wereldbekerkwalificatie springen vindt plaats op zondagmiddag 27 januari.

Naast Amsterdam, is in 2008 ook Indoor Brabant gastheer voor een wereldbekerkwalificatiewedstrijd springen en vindt daar de wereldbekerfinale dressuur plaats.
